CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF TEETH SENSITIVITY

Have you ever experienced discomfort after biting into ice-cream or sipping hot soup? If so, you are not alone! While this pain might be a sign of cavity, it is also a common occurrence among those with sensitive teeth.

Tooth sensitivity occurs when teeth react  strongly to various stimuli like hot, cold, sweet or acidic foods and drinks, exposure to cold air or even while brushing. Tooth sensitivity can mean anything from getting mild twinges to having severe discomfort that can continue for several hours.

Why do I experience sensitivity in my teeth?

The outer layer of the tooth known as enamel, serves as a shield for the more sensitive dentin underneath. When this dentin becomes exposed, sensitivity occurs.

The following are various factors that leads to dentin exposure, subsequently causing tooth sensitivity

  1. Brushing too hard: wrong method of brushing or if not using a soft brush, gums can pull away from tooth roots or can cause wearing away of enamel, exposing dentin

  2. Dental erosion: Loss of tooth enamel caused by attacks of acid from acidic food and drinks or can be due to underlying medical conditions such as gastroenteritis.

  3. Teeth grinding: Grinding or clenching of teeth on regular basis can wear off the enamel

  4. Gum disease: Tartar build up can cause gums to recede down causing dentin exposure

  5. Cracked tooth or filling can expose the dentin layer

  6. Frequent use of whitening products or teeth whitening treatments: The chemicals used in this treatments are tough on tooth enamel

  7. Recent dental procedures: Professional cleaning, filling, cap placement may provoke tooth sensitivity, but it will be temporary and goes away on its own.
