Mouthwash is everywhere- In the Ads and medical stores. But is it actually necessary or just a marketing from the product companies which make us think we need it?!
What Does Mouthwash Do?
Kills few bacteria in your mouth.
Makes your breath smell fresh (for a little while).
Can help fight cavities (if it has fluoride).
Might help with gum disease (if prescribed by a dentist).
What Mouthwash Doesn’t Do?
It does not replace brushing and flossing.
It does not remove plaque—only brushing does that.
It does not cure bad breath—it just covers it up.
So when can we use it !!?
Mouthwashes are not for everyone but it helps in some cases in which
When your dentist recommends it for your gum disease or post a surgical procedure in your mouth such as after implant placement or a gum surgery
When you have braces and need extra cleaning
So, is mouthwash worth it?
For most people? No, it’s optional.
If recommended by a dentist? Yes, it can help specific issues.
As a daily habit? It’s more of a preference than a necessity.
What harm can daily usage of mouthwash do?
Kills good bacteria:
Some mouthwashes can wipe out helpful bacteria along with the bad ones, which can upset the natural balance in your mouth.
Can dry out your mouth:
Mouthwashes with alcohol can reduce saliva, leaving your mouth feeling dry — and that can actually lead to more bad breath and cavities.
May stain your teeth:
Some types (like those with chlorhexidine) can cause brown stains on your teeth and tongue if used too often.
Affects your taste:
Using certain mouthwashes every day might make food and drinks taste strange or dull for a while.
Can irritate your mouth:
Strong formulas might cause burning, soreness, or sensitivity in your cheeks, gums, or tongue, especially if your mouth is already sensitive.
Slows healing:
After dental work, heavy mouthwash use might slow down the healing of your gums or tissues.
Can lead to more tartar:
Some mouthwashes can change the environment in your mouth and actually help tartar build up faster.
Might hide real problems:
If you’re using mouthwash to cover up bad breath, it could delay finding out about gum disease or tooth decay that needs real treatment.
