Stress is something we all experience from time to time, but did you know that other than your overall health, it can have an effect on your teeth and gums too?!!

Here are few reasons to keep your stress in bay:
1. Teeth Grinding & Clenching
• When you’re stressed, you unknowingly clench your jaw or grind your teeth, even in your sleep.
• This can lead to worn-down teeth, jaw pain, and even headaches.
2. Gum problems
• Stress can affect your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight bacteria in your mouth.
• This increases the risk of gum infections, bleeding gums, bad breath, and even tooth loss.
3. Dry Mouth
• Stress can reduce saliva production, leading to a dry mouth.
• Saliva helps to wash away food particles and fight against the bacteria causing cavities so a dry mouth can increase the risk of cavities and infections.
4. Mouth Ulcers
• Stress can trigger painful mouth ulcers inside your mouth.
• These usually heal on their own but can be uncomfortable and make eating difficult.
5. Poor Oral Hygiene Habits
• When life gets stressful, brushing and flossing might be affected.
• Skipping oral care leads to plaque buildup, cavities, and bad breath.
6. Unhealthy Eating & Sugar Cravings
• Stress often makes people crave sugary and acidic foods.
• These foods increase the risk of cavities and tooth erosion.
7. Jaw Pain & TMJ Disorders
• Constant stress can strain your jaw muscles, causing pain and stiffness.
• This can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, making it painful to chew or talk.
8. Weakened Immune System
• Stress affects overall health, making it harder for your body to fight oral infections. This can make healing from dental procedures slower.
So how can we protect our oral health from stress:
- Practice relaxation techniques like breathing exercises and meditation
- Stay hydrated to prevent dry mouth
- Maintain regular oral care routine like brushing twice
- Avoid excessive caffeine, sugary foods or drinks , and alcohol
- Use a mouth guard if you have a habit of grinding your teeth at night
- Visit your dentist regularly for checkups.
In case you are someone who’s prone to regular stressful scenarios, make it a point to regularly visit your dentist to avoid any permanent damage to your teeth. Managing stress is not only helpful for your mind but essential for your smile too!!
